Meaning
Metrology equipment uses lasers or structured light sensors to measure the physical dimensions of an object without touching the surface. A non contact cmm allows for the inspection of soft materials and complex geometries that would be deformed by a traditional touch probe.
Sensor Technology
Opto electronic devices capture thousands of data points per second to create a dense point cloud of the component. The non contact cmm utilizes these sensors to map the topography of the part with high speed. This method is preferred for components with fragile finishes or intricate surface textures.
Surface Interaction
Reflection of the light beam from the workpiece provides the raw data for the measurement software. Because the non contact cmm does not apply physical force, it can measure thin walls and elastic polymers without introducing error. The accuracy of the result depends on the reflectivity and the color of the part material.
Inspection Throughput
Rapid data acquisition reduces the time required for a full dimensional audit of a production batch. While a tactile probe takes several minutes to touch a few dozen points, a non contact cmm captures the entire geometry in a single scan. This efficiency supports the move from periodic sampling to one hundred percent inspection on the assembly line.
