Meaning
Distribution of phase and time synchronization with full timing support from the network is governed by a specific telecom profile of the Precision Time Protocol. This profile, known as ITU-T G.8275.1, requires every network node to participate in the synchronization chain. It defines the message rates, clock types and selection algorithms required for telecommunications networks.
Profile Specification
The profile mandates the use of multicast Ethernet encapsulation for PTP messages to ensure efficient distribution. This ITU-T G.8275.1 specification also defines the use of the alternate Best Master Clock Algorithm for node selection. Using this modified algorithm allows telecom networks to build redundant timing paths that switch quickly during link failures.
Protocol Architecture
Deploying this profile requires all intermediate switches to act as telecom boundary clocks or telecom transparent clocks. While a pilot run might use a subset of nodes, full-scale production requires every device on the path to support the standard. This full timing support removes packet delay variation and ensures that the slave clocks receive highly stable timing signals, which protects cellular synchronization across the entire network.
Operational Cost
Upgrading the network infrastructure to support this telecom profile requires capital expenditure. Failing to deploy compliant hardware leads to synchronization failures that disrupt mobile services. The profile provides a standardized framework that reduces the risk of long-term network instability.
