Meaning
Freight forwarding documents confirm that a logistics provider has taken charge of a shipment with irrevocable instructions to dispatch it to the consignee. The forwarder certificate of receipt is a non-negotiable document issued to the seller upon delivery of the goods to the forwarder. It provides immediate proof of delivery, allowing the seller to secure payment under a letter of credit before the ocean vessel departs.
This instrument simplifies international trade by separating physical transport from payment release.
Document Function
Freight forwarders issue these receipts to certify that they hold the goods in good condition. When using a forwarder certificate of receipt, the seller is released from physical control over the consignment. The document is not a document of title, meaning it does not represent ownership of the cargo.
It merely confirms that the forwarder has assumed responsibility for the transport of the goods to the named destination.
Risk Transfer
Sellers transfer the responsibility for shipping arrangements to the forwarder at the collection point. The forwarder certificate of receipt establishes that the seller has fulfilled its delivery obligation under specified trade terms. This document minimizes disputes between the buyer and the seller regarding the timing of delivery.
Once issued, the seller cannot alter the routing or stop the delivery without the agreement of the forwarder.
Commercial Use
Letters of credit frequently accept these documents to trigger payments to exporters. Because the forwarder certificate of receipt is issued upon inland receipt, the exporter avoids delays associated with waiting for the ocean bill of lading. This accelerates payment and improves the working capital of the exporter.
