Meaning
Fluid resistance measurements determine the energy required to move air or liquid through a distribution network at a specific velocity. Dynamic pressure loss is the reduction in total pressure caused by friction between the moving fluid and the walls of the pipes or ducts. It also includes the turbulence generated by elbows, valves and changes in cross-sectional area.
Flow Resistance
System resistance increases with the square of the flow velocity. Dynamic pressure loss dictates the energy needed to push air through a duct.
Duct Geometry
Smooth, straight runs of piping minimize the contact surface and the disruption of the flow profile. Every bend or fitting added to the design increases the dynamic pressure loss and forces the pump or fan to work harder. Engineers use equivalent length tables to calculate the impact of these components during the design phase of a new facility.
Energy Consumption
High losses in the distribution system lead to higher utility bills and the need for larger motors. Reducing the dynamic pressure loss through better routing and larger pipe diameters pays for itself over the life of the machine. Accurate calculations ensure that the delivered pressure at the point of use meets the requirements for the production tools.
