Meaning
Electrical coupling devices provide galvanic isolation while converting voltage levels and shifting phase angles between primary and secondary windings. Using a delta wye transformer allows for the creation of a local neutral point on the secondary side (which facilitates the distribution of single phase loads from a three phase supply). This configuration typically connects three primary windings in a closed loop and three secondary windings at a common center point.
The device stops at the secondary terminals where the derived neutral establishes the reference for the downstream system.
Winding Arrangement
Primary connections are configured in a triangle while secondary windings meet at a central node. This delta wye transformer setup enables a phase shift of thirty degrees between the input and the output.
Harmonic Suppression
Third order currents circulate within the primary loop without passing into the supply grid. By trapping these triplen harmonics inside the delta winding, the delta wye transformer prevents distortion from reaching upstream equipment or affecting the utility power quality. This mechanism relies on the magnetic flux cancellation that occurs when balanced currents of a specific frequency meet at the junction of the loop.
Grounding Advantage
Secondary neutral points provide a reliable path for return currents and fault detection. Connecting the center point of the delta wye transformer to earth stabilizes the voltage of each phase relative to the ground. This grounding prevents the neutral potential from moving in response to unbalanced loads.
