Meaning
Industrial piping networks utilize a recirculating design to provide consistent pressure and temperature to multiple workstations. A closed loop header is a main distribution pipe that returns the fluid back to the source rather than terminating at the last point of use. This configuration is common in chilled water, compressed air and chemical delivery systems.
Thermal Distribution
Maintaining a constant temperature is easier when the fluid is in continuous motion through the supply line. A closed loop header prevents the fluid from stagnating in dead legs where it would otherwise gain or lose heat. This ensures that the first machine on the line and the last machine on the line receive fluid at the same thermal state.
Pressure Equalization
Demand spikes at one station can cause a pressure drop that affects the performance of downstream equipment. Because the closed loop header allows flow from two directions, the pressure remains more stable throughout the network. This redundancy is vital for high precision actuators that require a steady force to maintain tolerances.
System Integrity
Monitoring the return flow provides data on the overall health of the piping. A closed loop header makes it possible to detect leaks by comparing the mass flow leaving the pump with the mass flow returning to the tank. It also facilitates easier chemical treatment and filtration because the entire volume of fluid eventually passes through the central processing area.
