Meaning
Crystallographic orientation of single-crystal aluminum oxide along the optical axis provides zero intrinsic birefringence for light traveling perpendicular to the surface. Utilizing c-cut sapphire allows the construction of high-durability windows that preserve the polarization state of transmitted laser beams. This specific cut is the most common orientation for laser windows because the optic behaves isotropically for normal incidence light.
Optomechanical Alignment
Precision alignment of the optical axis with the propagation direction of the laser beam is necessary to maintain low transmission loss. When the incoming beam deviates from the normal of a c-cut sapphire window, the light encounters the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices of the crystal. This misalignment introduces unwanted phase shifts between orthogonal polarization components.
Stress Sensitivity
External forces distort the crystal lattice. Under tension, c-cut sapphire exhibits stress-induced birefringence that can disrupt polarization even at normal incidence.
Surface Finish
Mechanical grinding and chemical mechanical polishing must be carefully controlled to avoid introducing sub-surface damage along the hard crystal plane. Because the c-plane is highly resistant to chemical attack, polishing times are longer than those for other orientations. Ensuring a low surface roughness prevents scatter and minimizes the risk of laser-induced damage during high-intensity pulses.
