Meaning
Precision recesses in heavy press structures accommodate guide blocks with defined limits of allowable deviation. Within tooling design, bolster pocket tolerance governs the allowable variation in the physical dimensions of the machined pocket that holds tool inserts or bolster plates. This dimensional boundary ensures that the insert fits securely without excessive lateral movement or binding during high-tonnage stamping.
Dimensional Fit
Machining operations use precise milling to establish repeatable dimensions in cast iron frames. A correct bolster pocket tolerance must be achieved on the milling machine to prevent tool wear. Too loose a fit causes insert movement.
Clearance Requirement
Very tight dimensions create assembly difficulties when inserting the blocks into the frame. Achieving a tight bolster pocket tolerance requires high-accuracy machining that increases production costs. If the pocket is too small, manual grinding is required to make it fit.
Capability Assessment
A capability run determines whether the machining center can maintain these dimensions consistently over a large production batch. If the tool room relies on pilot run samples without assessing long-term machine capability, tool wear will push the bolster pocket tolerance out of specification during full production. This failure leads to manual adjustments and expensive downtime on the assembly floor.
