Meaning
Revenue recognition method where a seller invoices a customer for goods but retains physical possession until a later delivery date. A bill and hold arrangement allows a buyer to secure inventory and lock in pricing while delaying shipment due to lack of warehouse space or pending project readiness. It requires specific criteria to be met under accounting standards to ensure the transaction is a bona fide sale rather than a method to inflate quarterly earnings.
Recognition Criterion
Revenue cannot be recorded unless the product is ready for shipment and held at the buyer’s request. The seller must not have the ability to use or direct the bill and hold stock to another customer once the transaction is finalized.
Custodial Risk
Ownership rights usually pass to the buyer despite the physical location of the goods remaining at the factory. This transfer of risk must be documented through a formal agreement that specifies the duration of the storage period and the liability for damage during that interval.
Operational Audit
Auditors verify that the inventory is physically segregated from other stock and clearly identified as belonging to the customer. Regular inspections confirm that the quantity recorded on the invoice matches the physical count in the holding area.
